Catalog Description : An examination of a particular topic in modern or contemporary art history. Students are expected to carry out independent research. The topic will change periodically. Course may be repeated with the consent of the instructor. Students are expected to carry out an independent research project that will serve as preparation for ARHI 680.

Topic for Spring 2013: Gender and Art Since 1863
This seminar will examine the representation of gender (by both men and women) in the visual arts of the late 19th and 20th centuries. From Manet’s infamous Olympia and her confrontational sexuality to contemporary representations that challenge our understanding of gender identity, this course examines the role gender has played in the development of art from the modern and post-modern periods.
