Topics for special study in Spanish of Peninsular and Latin American literatures and cultures. Topics in this series vary from year to year, according to students’ and instructor’s needs and interests. The course may be repeated with consent of the instructor, if the topic has changed. Taught in Spanish.
Topic for Winter 2014: "We are Sudamerican Rockers": Musical Counterculture in Hispanic America
This class proposes to familiarize students with a wide variety of Latin American and Spanish music, specifically rock, punk, and other genres that flourished during periods of political and economic tension and repression. Through analysis and close reading of lyrics, music videos, and concerts performances, students will gain a deeper understanding of events that helped to shape the sociopolitical landscape of Hispanic America, such as the Movida madrileƱa, the dictatorships of the Southern Cone, and Mexican and Central American immigration reform.
