(2) What is it to explain a phenomenon or confirm a hypothesis? (3) Do the explanatory posits of a science—such as quarks and strings—actually exist? (4) Are there scientific laws? We will explore some of the more plausible answers to such questions. Readings will include selections from a variety of contemporary and 20th century philosophical texts.
