Catalog Description : An exploration of a musicological topic that is more narrowly focused than or lies outside the scope of the Introduction to Music Literature course. May be repeated when topic is different. Does not satisfy course requirements for any music major.

Topic for Fall 2013: Das Lied
A study of the lives and works of the great German song composers.


Topic for Spring 2014: History of the Symphony from Haydn to Bruckner
This course is designed for students who are interested in exploring the world of classical music through the study of symphonic works by the great eighteenth and nineteenth century masters, beginning with composers of the Classical period and ending with the late Romantics. Content will include both historical background of the composers and study of the basic structural frameworks of several pieces to be studied in detail. Ability to read music is not required as this course will develop musical knowledge through careful listening. Does not satisfy course requirements for any music major.
