Topic for Winter 2015: Film Rules--The Powers and Perils of Genres
Each genre—sci-fi adventure, documentary, noir, romantic comedy, the western—takes its shape and creates its pleasure by observing a unique set of rules, assumptions, and values. But following those rules can be as dangerous as breaking them. When does a formula flop? When does it become art? This course examines how genres pose not just economic but also cultural, artistic, and ethical challenges for producers, consumers, and scholars of film.
