Catalog Description : A study of a composer’s career, emphasizing the relationship between composer and society. Topics in this series vary from year to year. May be repeated when topic is different.

Topic for Winter 2017: Benjamin Britten
This course will examine the life and works of Benjamin Britten in historical and social contexts through study of selected masterpieces that illumine his particular artistic preoccupations: reverence for the expressive possibilities of the human voice, corruption of innocence, sexuality, poetry, and pacifism. The core of the syllabus will draw upon several major operas, including Peter Grimes, Billy Budd, and The Turn of the Screw, as well as one or more of the song cycles and War Requiem.
