Prerequisites/Notes: Sophomore standing

Catalog Description : An explanation of a particular topic in ethnic studies. Topics may pertain to an issue or debate, a specific ethno-racial community, a geographic area, or a historical time period. The specific topic investigated changes each year or varies by term. May be repeated when topic is different.

Topic for Fall 2016: Black Cultural Tourism
Investigation of black travelers and tourists as well as black bodies as ‘othered’ objects of the tourist gaze. Students will read foundational texts in both global cultural tourism and black cultural tourism and will explore the travel blogs of black travelers and the websites of black-owned travel companies. Student assignments include visual analyses of websites, social media activities, and the population of a course-specific student-centered blog.



Topic for Winter 2017: African Immigrant Narratives
A survey of literature and film about African immigrant experiences in the United States. Students will complete film and book reviews, create an infographic that covers migration data from a specific African country since 1960, and develop a research project (paper, multimedia presentation, or digital project) that analyzes immigration and media representations of African immigrants in the United States.
