Topic for Spring 2017: Readings in Russian Pre-Petrine History
The readings for this course are structured around Benjamin Rifkin’s textbook Advanced Russian Through History. We will concentrate on the historical period stretching from Kievan Rus’ to the end of the seventeenth century (the period before Peter the Great’s westernizing reforms). Readings will be supplemented with visual materials (art, crafts, and movies). Additional readings will introduce the students to the usage of historical memory in contemporary Russian political discourse and in discussions about national identity.
