Prerequisites/Notes: CLAS 220 and 225 or consent of instructor.

Catalog Description : This course examines specific issues in classical scholarship, ranging from longstanding questions of analysis and interpretation to contemporary topics of research and debate. Students will develop their familiarity with the methods of classical scholarship as they undertake independent work culminating in a research paper or book reveiw. Recommended for majors and students considering graduate study in classics.

Topic for Spring 2017: Individual and Community in the Ancient World
This multi-disciplinary course will consider six moments in Greco-Roman literary history in order to explore the relationship between individual and collective and its evolution over time. We will read primary sources in English translation and in Greek or Latin, as well as scholarly secondary sources. Issues to be considered include: leadership, political and social community, the role of the individual in society, and the complexities involved in using ancient authors as sources for understanding the past.
