Topic for Spring 2017: Music and Meaning
For many, the love of music stems from its powerful expressive capabilities, encompassing the greatest exuberance and the deepest pathos, but how can music express complex ideas without words, dance, or depiction? In this exploration of musical semiotics, students will apply insights from linguistics, philosophy, Gestalt psychology, literary theory, and cognitive science to the interpretation of music from many repertoires.
