Prerequisites/Notes: ARHI 175 or sophomore standing

Catalog Description : This lecture-discussion course will focus on the diverse artistic production and consumption within Edo-period Japan (1603-1868). Topics include the revival of classical imagery, the rise of an urban bourgeois culture, the prints and paintings depicting theater and the pleasure quarters, the reification of the tea ceremony and encounters with the West through trade. Coursework will include exams and written work, and presentation.
