Catalog Description : In this discussion course, we'll consider British poetry and prose of the eighteenth century specifically designed to frighten readers in order to uncover just what anxieties—cultural, racial, political—these texts are meant to awaken. Students will complete numerous short assignments, a group research project, and a researched term paper. Authors might include: Defoe, Walpole, Gray, Radcliffe, Austen. PREREQUISITES: Junior standing, ENG 230, or consent of instructor
