Catalog Description : This course surveys the history of Great Britain from the political upheavals of 1688 to the present day. Emphasis will be on broad political and economic themes: the development of parliamentary democracy, the growth of modern industrial capitalism, and the extension and eventual collapse of the British Empire. We will also examine some of the major cultural and intellectual achievements of the period. (E)
