Prerequisites/Notes: Sophomore standing or consent of instructor Catalog Description : A close examination of 17th- and 18th-century intellectual trends (during the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment) that influenced the epistemological, scientific, and political assumptions of the modern world. Works by such authors as Galileo, Bacon, Descartes, Hobbes, Newton, Locke, Voltaire, Rousseau, Goethe, and Wollstonecraft will trace the displacement of divine authority by human authority as the basis of knowledge in what some modern philosophers have called the “Quest for Certainty” that followed the 16th century.
