Catalog Description : This course examines how religious cultures and discourses contributed to the emergence of the concept of race, racial classification, and processes of 'racialization'; how biblical interpretation both justified and contested the transatlantic slave trade; and how anti-Black racism relates to anti-Semitism. The course examines the history of doctrines on indigenous peoples, race science, and exploitation, and the dynamics of race and ethnicity in Israel and Palestine. Lecture/discussion with final paper. PREREQUISITES: Sophomore standing
