Catalog Description :
An advanced seminar in modern international and/or comparative history. The course combines review of key theoretical and historiographical issues with research and analysis of primary sources. Possible topics include: Secret Intelligence in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries; the History of the Cold War; and the International History of the Second World War. (G&C) Fulfills seminar requirement. May be repeated when topic is different.
Topic for Spring 2019: Stalin and Stalinism
A study of Joseph Stalin as leader of the Soviet Union from 1928-1953 and the political and social system to which he gave his name. Themes include: Stalin's biography; the politics of dictatorship; everyday life and private life; foreign affairs and war; and the use of mass terror by the Soviet state. We will examine historical debates about these themes and interpret primary sources, including memoir literature, mass media, and government documents. Students with knowledge of Russian will be encouraged to do some work with sources in the original language.
