Prerequisites/Notes: Sophomore Standing Catalog Description : A seminar that provides in-depth study of a specific topic in history. May be repeated when topic changes. Topic for Winter 2020: Sports and Politics in American History This seminar will examine sports as an arena where broader trends in American social, racial, economic, and political history have played out since the 19th century. By focusing on politicized moments in sports history, and investigating sporting sites as places of both domination and resistance in the United States, we will consider relationships among sports, athletes, capitalism, and the environment, as well as racial, gender, and social movements.
