Advanced studies in music analysis, such as Schenkerian analysis, late 19th-century chromaticism, and analysis and performance. Topics vary from year to year. Course may be repeated with consent of instructor.
Topic for Spring 2020: Analysis of Russian Music
An analytical engagement with Russian art music of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, probing vocal and instrumental works by Glinka, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky, Scriabin, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Gubaidulina, and others in light of Russian folk tradition, sociopolitical context, and current theories of harmony and form.
