Topic for Spring 2020: Music in the United States
What does it mean for music to “sound American”? This course introduces case studies in the history of concert music and experimental music in the United States since the late nineteenth century, comparing the different ways that composers such as Amy Beach, Charles Ives, Aaron Copland, Ruth Crawford, William Grant Still, Kurt Weill, Leonard Bernstein, Steve Reich, and Joan Tower have sought to develop distinctly “American” styles and approaches. In addition to focusing on selected musical works by these and other composers, we will explore the institutions, canons, and narratives of “American” music.
