Topic for Winter 2021: Media and Medicine in Modern America This course examines the co-development of modern media and modern medicine in the U.S. since the 19th century. Through lecture and discussion we will explore how media portrayals of medical research, institutions, and the health care system shape relationships among biomedical scientists, health care providers, and the public. Topics include the role of the media in shaping conceptions of the body; constructing diseases; influencing health policy; informing expectations of health and medicine and constructions of citizenship; mental health; and the medicalization of American life. Topic for Winter 2021: South Asia in Contemporary World History In our study of modern South Asia this term, we begin with examinations of European colonization on the subcontinent and complete the term with a look at recent headlines. Along the way, we will discuss modes of cultural and economic exchange with the west, colonial governance with reference to colonialism elsewhere, caste and inequality, the rise of anti-colonial nationalism and the struggle for liberation, the partition of India into two (and later three) independent nations, sport and cinema (cricket and Bollywood), and the recent turn toward majoritarian and ethno-nationalist politics. We will draw on a variety of primary documents in the form of treatises, government sources, film, literary and journalistic accounts, while referencing secondary sources by historians and social scientists.
