Catalog Description : Explores a particular topic of current interest in gender studies, and may be cross-listed with other departments. Topics will vary with each offering of the course. Different iterations of the course may be taken for credit with the instructor's consent. There are no prerequisites for this course.



Topic for Fall 2021: From Beatlemania to the Beyhive: Queer and Feminist Pop Music Studies
In this seminar course, students will analyze pop music's queer and feminist problems and possibilities. Topics include music listeners and fandom, queering the popular, pop music and appropriation, and celebrity and cultural identity. Students will complete weekly discussion posts, a short analysis of a pop song of their choice, and an annotated bibliography accompanied by a themed playlist. May be repeated when topic is different.
