Topic for Winter 2022: TURN OF THE CENTURY VIENNA
In this course, we will explore the changing city of Vienna, its rich history and importance as the capital of the multicultural and multiethnic Austro-Hungarian empire, as well as its complex and complicated politics. The advent of modernism through art, literature, architecture, philosophy, and architecture serves as the foundation through which we will interrogate Vienna's multifaceted society and its people in a time of crisis, transition, generational shifts, and increasingly virulent anti-Semitism and nationalism in the lead up to World War I and the eventual collapse of the Habsburg monarchy.
