Topic for Spring 2022: Divine Love in Seventeenth Century Music
In this course, we will examine musical depictions of the mystical union between the earthly and the divine in 17th-century sacred music. Through this study, we will come to better understand 17th-c spirituality, the role of music in spiritual life, and the theological aims and earthly politics of musical representations of divine love. We will learn how to engage with musickings from different perspectives, including modal analysis, tonal analysis, carnal musicology, and performance practice studies. We will also come to new understandings about early modern gender, sexuality, embodiment, and power.
Topic for Spring 2022: Music in the 1920s
In this course we will explore music in the 1920s from a variety of perspectives. Topics will include: early radio and the record industry, the songs of Tin Pan Alley and Broadway, modernist and experimental composition, machine music, vaudeville and cabaret song, blues, jazz, old time music, the music of the Harlem Renaissance and Afrocubanismo, and vernacular genres first recorded during the 1920s in cities all over the world, including calypso, kroncong, marabi, mariachi, rebetiko, samba, and tarab.
