Catalog Description : What if we think of an ocean as a meeting place and not a barrier? Between 1400 and 1800 the peoples living in west Africa, western Europe, and the Atlantic coast of the Americas encountered each other with transformative, often devastating consequences. This course investigates the creation of this "Atlantic World" and the identities formed as a result, uncovering how wars, piracy, enslavement, and resistance unfolded on ships and at sea. (G&C) PREREQUISITES: Sophomore standing or consent of instructor
