Topic for Fall 2022: Urban Ecology
Prerequisites: BIOL 150
Cities are alive with multiple complex systems working together to maintain services that we depend on. There is always a struggle that exists between providing human services and maintaining urban ecological systems. In this course we explore how biodiversity uses urban landscapes and how to manage these landscapes to try and maintain balance in urban systems. We will travel to various urban greenspaces, explore ecological management strategies, and meet with professionals working in this field. We will take deep explorations into human greenspace use, waste management and environmental services that directly influence how urban systems function. We will explore the ecological principles at play in regulating and conserving biodiversity in these living landscapes of cities.
