Topic for Winter 2023: Translation: Effects and Affects
Prerequisites: GER 312
Translation is highly political, since it affects our understanding of language, law, culture, and identity. We will analyze literary and philosophical responses to this quandary, their language of affect and their cultural implications: from Luther’s comments on his bible translation to contemporary texts with a particular focus on the possibility of ‘original translations,’ this course introduces students to translation as a paradigm of modern thought. Taught in German.
