An exploration of a musicological topic that is more narrowly focused than or lies outside the scope of the Introduction to Music Literature course. May be repeated when topic is different. Does not satisfy course requirements for any music major.
Topic for Spring 2023: London Soundscapes
Prerequisites: None
The term soundscape describes the multiple layers of sound that are particular to a specific location and time. Through this course, students will explore the multiple ways natural, urban, and intentionally created sound informs, impacts, and expresses human life in London. This will be an interdisciplinary course incorporating scholarship and ideas from the overlapping fields of ecomusicology (the study of the intersections of music, culture, and nature), soundscape composition, acoustic design, and urban sound studies.
