Catalog Description : An examination of a particular topic in medieval or Renaissance art history. The topic will change periodically. Course may be repeated when the topic is different. Students are expected to carry out an independent research project that will serve as preparation for ARHI 680.

Topic for Spring 2023: Pilgrimage Art & Practice
Prerequisites: One 200- or 300-level course in art history, or consent of the instructor
Medieval Christians took pilgrimages to Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago de Compostela, and any number of smaller cult sites across Christendom. This class will focus on the arts, architecture, and practices of medieval Christian pilgrimage, with comparative materials drawn from Muslim and Jewish traditions. Primary sources in translation will supplement readings analyzing the arts, practices, travels, and theological underpinnings of this enduring practice.
