Topic for Spring 2023: World Music in the Global City
Prerequisites: Sophomore standing
Students in this course will explore a variety of “non-Western” and non-classical musics practiced and performed by local and diasporic communities in London. We will focus in particular on how people engage in those musics to assert senses of identity, heritage, and culture, and as tools for political and social empowerment. Students will becoming familiar with concepts of diaspora, migration, colonialization, and globalization and how they each affect individuals as well as musical traditions.
