Catalog Description :
An examination of a particular topic in modern or contemporary art history. Students are expected to carry out independent research, culminating in a research paper. The topic will change periodically. Course may be repeated when topic is different. Not open to students who have previous received credit for ARHI 341.
Topic for Fall 2023: Thinking About Things
PREREQUISITES: One 200-level course in art history or consent of instructor
This seminar will explore the materiality of art and objects. We will examine how we make things and how things make us, how we value things and understand things, the physicality of things, and the exchange and circulation of things. Case studies will range across multiples time periods and locations. We will combine various theoretical approaches to understanding material culture with hands-on learning. The course will culminate in a research project.
