Topic for
Topic for Spring 2024: Forests and Human Flourishing
PREREQUISITES: Instructor approval required
This course will investigate the metaphorical connection between the flourishing of forests and human beings. We will examine ancient works like the Epic of Gilgamesh as well as more recent fiction and non-fiction works on trees and forests. We will learn to name the trees on campus and examine historical patterns of religion and logging in Wisconsin. As a class we will consider the validity (or desirability) of applying the metaphor of the forest to human society, and whether this metaphor could counter rampant individualism.
