Catalog Description : An examination of the relationship between religion and politics in the United States. Topics will include: the place of religion in the public sphere (both historically and constitutionally); First Amendment protections and restrictions; Christianity and social justice movements (abolition, civil rights, abortion); the notion of “civil religion”; the rise of “Christian nationalism” in the 21st century.
