Prerequisites/Notes: Sophomore standing Catalog Description : This course explores major disasters, such as epidemic diseases, earthquakes, and fires, and their effects on the Americas to understand how these incidents both shaped, and were shaped by, society. We will consider how disasters and state responses affected governance and social relations. We also consider how these responses might inform decision making in the twenty-first century.
