Catalog Description : Close reading and study of texts selected from the corpus of ancient Greek literature, read in English translation. Each iteration of the course will focus on a particular author, genre, or theme in Greek literature. Possible topics include: Greek historiography, Greek lyric poetry, and literature of the Hellenistic period. May be repeated when the topic is different. TOPICS FOR Fall 2025: Herodotus and Thucydides PREREQUISITES: None In this course we will engage in close reading and analysis of the first great works of ancient Greek historiography: Herodotus' Histories and Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War. We will consider the different ways in which Herodotus and Thucydides handle such issues as: geography and ethnography; political, diplomatic, and cultural analysis; the incorporation of speeches and set pieces within historical narrative; and the use (or abuse) of available sources and evidence. Classes will be conducted primarily in a seminar format. All texts in English translation.
