Prerequisites/Notes: Sophomore standing and either GOVT 110 or GOVT 140 Catalog Description : Are conflicts between identity groups inevitable? Why do outbreaks of violence and ethnic conflict occur when they do? How have government and non-government actors dealt with the aftermath of ethnic violence, and with what consequences? Students will read about cases of ethnic politics and violence drawn from several countries around the world, with particular focus on South Asia and the former Yugoslavia. Cases from other parts of the world will be used primarily for comparative and theoretical perspective.
