Fall Term 2025 ASP IN PHYS: WHIRLIGIG OF TIME - 6160 - PHYS 114

Catalog Description : Treats topics selected for the non-scientist who wants one term of physics. For example, the class may cover topics like the nature of space or the nature of time, special and general relativity, and light. Physics 114 is not intended to serve as a general introduction to physics as are PHYS 141 or PHYS 151, and does not supply an adequate background for intermediate or advanced topics. Unlike PHYS 115, PHYS 114 DOES include a lab and will meet the lab science GER. TOPIC FOR FALL: Whirligig of Time PREREQUISITES: None The Whirligig of Time explores the philosophical and scientific issues that surround the nature and measurement of time, including: ancient reckoning using celestial patterns, Newton’s critical assumption of an absolute time in The Principia, the clockmaking central to the Longitude Rewards of the 18th Century, relativistic considerations of space-time, and the possibility of quantized time. Part of the course includes astrometric measurements of the Sun and Moon using London’s singular landmarks, trips to the Horological and Astronomical Instrument Collections at The British Museum, the Clock Maker’s Museum at Imperial College, Greenwich Observatory—celebrating the 350th anniversary of its founding in 1675, and Stonehenge.
