Catalog Description : A study of the nervous system from the perspectives of psychology and biology. Topics vary year to year and may include glial cells, neural development, and the evolution of nervous systems and neurotransmitter systems. Lecture only. May be repeated when topic is different. TOPICS FOR Winter 2026: Brain in Control PREREQUISITES: CHEM 116, BIOL 150 and one course in psychology; or PSYC 360 and one course in biology; or consent of instructor How does the brain process information and regulate behavior to achieve our goals? This course explores the neural basis of cognitive control through in-depth discussions of book chapters and research articles utilizing methods such as electrophysiology and neuroimaging. We will examine studies in both humans and animals, covering brain function from network-level dynamics to broader systems-level mechanisms. TOPICS FOR Winter 2026: Sex and Gender in Neuroscience Research PREREQUISITES: CHEM 116, BIOL 150 and one course in psychology; or PSYC 360 and one course in biology; or consent of instructor This course explores the complex interplay between sex and gender in neuroscience research, challenging traditional binary frameworks. We will investigate current scientific understanding of sex and gender diversity and the limitations of binary models in neuroscientific research. We will learn about intersex, transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming experiences and the impact of simplistic sex/gender models on medical care and research. Additionally, we will discuss the ethical implications of sex/gender research. This course aims to deconstruct outdated paradigms in neuroscience, promote more inclusive and accurate research methodologies, and explore how neuroscience can better represent diverse sex physiologies. By the end of this course, students will gain a nuanced understanding of sex and gender in neuroscience, preparing them to conduct more inclusive and comprehensive research that serves all individuals, regardless of their sex or gender identity.
