Catalog Description : This course provides a world history through the medium of a single commodity: coffee. Readings examine the biology of the coffee shrub, coffee's psychoactive effects, its cultivation for markets , and its significance as an export for "Global South" nations. We investigate emerging forms of sociality around the production and consumption of coffee, from diverse labor forms to the stimulating milieus of Enlightenment salons and Starbucks. (G&C)
