Catalog Description : An in-depth examination of a particular topic in environmental history, suitable for majors in history and environmental studies. Students from other majors should consult the instructor before registering. May be repeated for credit when topic is different. TOPICS FOR Spring 2026: Gender in Environmental History PREREQUISITES: HIST 355 An advanced discussion-based class exploring how gender has shaped human relationships with non-human nature in different times and places. Students will examine how gendered divisions of labor, power structures, and cultural beliefs have influenced environmental practices, from agriculture and resource extraction to conservation movements and environmental activism. Likewise, we will analyze how environmental change has affected gendered experience and identities. Thinking about gender and the environment also entails considering the interface between bodies and environments. We will explore how medical and scientific understanding of gendered bodies have been shaped by environmental knowledge and how gendered concepts of embodiment and health have influenced environmental thought. Students with interests in the histories of medicine, science, and sexuality are encouraged to consider this course. The seminar emphasizes critical reading of primary sources and recent scholarship. Students will develop original research projects suitable for expansion into senior thesis work in history, gender studies, or environmental studies. Although research at the junction between gender history and environmental history is the focus of this class, students may pursue any aspect of gender or environmental history. This course fulfills the seminar requirement in the History major. Attributes: Cross-Listed Course, GER Humanities Div, 400-599 Advanced Course
