Catalog Description : Lectures will focus on the history of popular music in the United States, emphasizing the music of Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ artists and communities past and present, and addressing topics including: genre and song form, convention and innovation, listening practices and interpretation, the music industry and record production, authenticity and artifice, identity and community. Requirements will include listening assignments, lecture attendance, in-class writing and quizzes.
