Fall Term 2026 TOP: INTRO TO VISUAL CULTURE - 5345 - FIST 107

Catalog Description : Exploratory Topics in Film and Media Studies allows for an introductory examination of different aspects of film distribution, exhibition, and analysis. The course will emphasize experiential learning. May be repeated when topic is different. TOPICS FOR Fall 2026: Introduction to Visual Culture PREREQUISITES: None This seminar introduces students to the study of visual culture, looking each week at different visual objects and questions. Visual Culture (or sometime, Visual Studies) is a discipline that draws from Art History, Film Studies, Media Studies, and other fields in order to address questions that these fields themselves do not address. So, over the course of the term, we will tackle questions like: What is an image? What is the role of media and technology in visual culture? What differentiates “art” in the visual sphere? What is vision? Do the ways in which humans look at the world change over time? Students will complete regular readings, responses, and creative assignments with critical reflections in order to grapple with these questions.
