Prerequisites/Notes: At least one 400-level course or instructor approval. Catalog Description : This course will examine an advanced topic in the field of French and Francophone Studies. Topics will vary from year to year and examine both primary and secondary texts. May be repeated when topic is different. TOPICS FOR Fall 2026: Structure and Subject: Intro to French Theory PREREQUISITES: At least one 400-level course or instructor approval This course offers an introductory survey of "French Theory" – an ensemble of mostly French modernist and postmodernist thinkers who have shaped the critical canon since the twentieth century. Central to this body of thought is a sustained attention to the construction of meaning: how does language shape our engagement with the world, with ourselves and with each other? Through the works of Foucault, Derrida, Kristeva and Barthes, among others, we will consider questions of power and the status of the “subject”, or individual, in society. Assignments will include reading journals, a short paper, and one longer paper with revisions. Each student will have the opportunity to incorporate theoretical concepts encountered in the course into their own analytical writing. Relevant to students across the humanities and social sciences – no prior knowledge of French or theory required. Taught in English. Students seeking credit toward the FREN minor or major will complete all readings and written assignments in French. They will also meet for an additional hour each week outside of regular class time (day and time to be determined) to discuss course content in French.
