Catalog Description : An introduction to Islam. Students begin with the Quran and gain familiarity with its themes and style. The second part is an examination of the mysticism of the Sufis. We see Islam rooted in a great medieval city like Cairo. Finally, we examine trends in contemporary Islam, ranging from fundamentalism to moderate versions of Islam in Senegal, Indonesia, and the US.
