Prerequisites/Notes: BIOL 130 and BIOL 150 or instructor approval Catalog Description : A course designed to offer students an opportunity to study important issues in biology not covered in other regularly offered classes. Activities may include reading and analysis of material from primary literature, consideration of interdisciplinary connections, and field and laboratory activities. TOPICS FOR Fall 2026: Mechanisms of Neuropharmacology and Neuropsychiatric Disease PREREQUISITES: BIOL 260, BIOL 325, BIOL 354, CHEM 340, or consent of instructor Neurophysiology, including drug interactions and effects, vary widely across development, physiological state, and neuropsychiatric condition/disease. Here, we will take a multi-pronged approach to understand how fundamental mechanisms of pharmacology function in both normal and altered physiological conditions. Using both genetic and biochemical manipulations we will explore in-depth the mechanisms by which drugs and endogenous neuronal compounds can interact with neuronal and glial cells types. We will examine these interactions (and downstream effects) at the circuit, cellular, and molecular levels to build a comprehensive model of drug effects on neuronal physiology.
