Prerequisites/Notes: MUCO 212 Catalog Description : Jazz, an African-American art form, is unusual in that almost the entire evolution of the genre is available on audio recordings. This provides an incredible wealth of primary sources to study. In MUCO 455 we will listen intensively to 75 selected recordings from the history of jazz. The evolution of Jazz provides a rich environment to study and discuss the impact of race and gender on the creation and proliferation of musical culture in America. Additional topics important to the development of Jazz are: recorded vs. live performances, recording technology, popular vs. art music, authenticity in musical performance, cultural appropriation, and the civil rights movement in 20th century America. In addition to the primary recordings, we will learn about the lives of the artists, study transcriptions, films, and historical readings.
