TOPICS FOR Winter 2027: Music in the United States PREREQUISITES: MUCO 212 In this seminar we will focus on aspects of the history and politics of music from the 1890s through the mid 20th century, emphasizing composers of mainstream classical music who sought to develop distinctly “American” approaches to musical composition by depicting the landscape of the American west, exploring the idea of the frontier, borrowing tunes from vernacular and folk musics, and expressing American nationalism and patriotism.
