Student responsibilities may include engagement with secondary historical writings, primary source evaluation, research and essay writing. TOPICS FOR Winter 2027: Sigmund Freud and his Discontent PREREQUISITES: None This course explores the formation of the self in historically specific social contexts. We begin with works by Freud and proceed to critics, such as Marcuse, Beauvoir, and Fanon. Questions we address: What is a ‘self?’ How is the self shaped by society, by gender and race, or intersubjectively, through the desires of ‘the other?’ How stable and autonomous is a mature self?
