Catalog Description : This course is a blend of philosophy, cognitive science, and hands-on AI experimentation. The main goal of the course is to compare human cognition with whatever computational generative AI systems (specifically, language models) do, exploring both their similarities and differences. We’ll first turn our attention to some salient aspects of human cognition. Then we’ll spend time directly engaging with Chat GPT, using systematic prompting experiments to probe how LLMs generate, structure, and respond to language. We’ll conclude with an extended philosophical comparison of human minds and generative AI. Discussion based, written work and exams.
