Catalog Description : This course represents an exploration of a topic in religious studies. Topics will emphasize contemporary questions and experiential learning. Assignments will emphasize experiential learning and discussion. May be repeated when topic is different. TOPICS FOR Winter 2027: Mysticism: Plato to Sufism PREREQUISITES: None This course examines the mystical tradition that traces the ascent of the Soul to the One. We will begin with a look at Plato and move on to the Neoplatonism of Plotinus, the source code for later mystics. We continue with a look at the way Greek philosophical mysticism was accepted and reworked by Muslim philosophers such as Avicenna and poets like Rumi. We examine similar ideas in the Judaism of Maimonides and the Kabbalah. Does mysticism offer a valid religious path in the modern world? Emphasis on close reading and discussion.
