Prerequisites/Notes: Sophomore Standing Catalog Description : This class explores how consumer culture in the twentieth century shaped Americans’ sense of nationalism, security, and self-worth. Students will examine how mass production, suburbia’s rise, and the advent of nationally-televised advertising campaigns created new notions of Americanness. Students enrolled in this class will engage in a critical examination of both celebrations and critiques of mass consumption and abundance, to understand how we’ve been sold the "American dream" while exploring how Americans have sought alternatives.
